St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland volleyball team opened up Capital Athletic Conference
play on a high note with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-24, 30-20) victory over
Hood College on Wednesday night.
St. Mary's (7-1, 1-0 CAC) was led offensively by sophomore
Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and
freshman Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) as
both recorded nine kills on the night. Junior Kellie
Krouse (Baltimore, Md./Towson) added seven for the
Seahawks.
Defensively, sophomore Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) tallied 13 digs, while Krouse chipped in nine.
Setters Megan Graydon (West Friendship,
Md./Glenelg) and Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) combined for 34 assists.
Feldmann served up five aces, while Krouse had four. As a
team, the Seahawks posted a hitting percentage of .186 and recorded
11 team blocks.
Jamie Gardner and Jamie Bussey both had 12
digs for Hood, while Lindsey Nagy tallied 10 kills and
four service aces.
The Seahawks return to action this weekend at the Richard
Stockton College quad match on September 15. St. Mary's first
match will be at 10:00 a.m. against Gwynedd-Mercy College, an
opponent that the Hawks beat 3-0 (30-17, 30-17, 30-8) on August 31
in their second match of the 2007 campaign. Hood will be in
action on Friday against Mt. Aloysius College at 4:00 at the
University of Scranton tournament.
