St. Mary's Doubles Up on Wesley

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Forwards Marianne Wood (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Memorial) and Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team spoil Wesley College's debut in the Capital Athletic Conference with a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Wood scored twice, while Norris added a goal and an assist in St. Mary's (4-1, 3-1 CAC) fourth consecutive win since dropping its season-opener to No. 6 Salisbury University on September 2.

Norris had a hand in the Seahawks' first two goals as she assisted on Wood's first tally of the day just two minutes into the game and then took a feed from sophomore midfielder Amanda Bramble (Easton, Md./Easton) to give St. Mary's a 2-0 lead at 9:14.

With 1:38 remaining in the first half, sophomore forward Brooke Bennett (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) cut the Hawk lead to one as Bennett fired in a loose ball into the lower left corner.  St. Mary's took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Senior midfielder Danielle Vincent (Camden, Del./Lake Forest) scored the equalizer at 57:23 as Vincent rocketed a shot from the top of the circle into the lower right corner.

However, the Seahawks notched two goals in 30 seconds to put the game out of reach.  Senior forward Mary Lyle Jeanes (Orange, Va./Orange County) deflected in senior forward Ali Femi's (Easton, Md./Easton) cross before Wood tallied her second of the day by tipping in freshman midfielder Caitlin Godstrey's (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) free hit at 67:18.

Wesley had 15 shots to SMCM's 13.  The Wolverines dominated penalty corners with 17 to St. Mary's five.

Senior Emily Richards (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) turned away six shots in the win, while senior LeAnne Hyslop (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) finished with three saves for Wesley.

The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, September 19 when SMCM hosts Catholic University at 4:30 in non-conference action.  Wesley will travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to square off against league opponent, University of Mary Washington, on Friday, September 21 at 4:30.
