Fredericksburg, Va. - The
University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used two goals in a
nine-minute span in the first half to blank St. Mary's College of
Maryland, 2-0, in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday
afternoon.
Mary Washington (6-1, 1-0 CAC) broke the scoreless tie when
freshman T.L. Tutor scored his first collegiate goal at
30:50, seconds after being inserted into the game, on an assist
from sophomore Ryan Taibl.
Taibl, the Eagles' leading scorer, netted his fifth goal of the
season at 39:57 and the Eagles held on from there.
Mary Washington out-shot St. Mary's (2-5, 1-2 CAC), 6-5, but
SMCM edged the Eagles 4-3 in the second half in shots. The
Seahawks also held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Several Hawk shots sailed wide and high with UMW keeper
Emmett Rutkowski making two saves.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, September 22 when St.
Mary's travels to Grantham, Pa. to take on No. 4 Messiah College in
non-conference action at 7:00.
