Elizabethtown, Pa. - After
starting the 2007 campaign with six straight wins, the St. Mary's
College of Maryland volleyball team has equaled that win streak
with a pair of victories at the Elizabethtown College Blue Jay
Classic on Friday night.
The Seahawks (12-1) posted a 3-1 (31-29, 29-31, 30-25, 30-26)
victory over host Elizabethtown (10-2) before sweeping Wilkes
University (6-9) by scores of 30-24, 30-20, 30-18.
In the match against Elizabethtown, freshman Claire
Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) starred for St. Mary's with a
season-high 18 kills as well as 4.0 blocks and three digs.
Junior Kellie Krouse (Baltimore, Md./Towson) also
posted double-digit kills with 13, while also adding a dozen digs.
Setters Megan Graydon (West Friendship,
Md./Glenelg) and Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) combined for 53 assists with Graydon dishing out
32. Sophomore Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) led the Hawks with 17 digs, while sophomore
Jen Lamar (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) served
up four aces.
Gregorini and junior Becca Tursell (Ellicott
City, Md./Glenelg) each tallied eight kills in leading the Seahawks
to a 3-0 win over Wilkes, while Kodan added seven. Gregorini
also had nine digs.
Graydon recorded seven aces in the match, tying her career-high
for the third time.
Heading into the second day of competition on Saturday, the
Seahawks own a 2-0 mark in Pool A, while Franklin & Marshall
College is 2-0 in Pool B. St. Mary's will face Swarthmore
College tomorrow at noon before heading into the crossover match at
either 2:30 or 4:30 depending on their final standing within Pool
A.
