St. Mary's Wins Fourth Straight CAC Contest

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team extended their home-game win streak to 10 with a 2-0 shutout of York (Pa.) College in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.  The Seahawks' (7-2, 4-1 CAC) last loss at Seahawk Stadium was a 1-0 overtime setback to Lynchburg College on September 17, 2006.

Senior forward Marianne Wood (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Memorial) started the scoring with her sixth tally of the season at 15:38.  The Hawks out-shot York, 7-1, in the first half as SMCM held on for the 1-0 halftime lead.

Wood had a hand in St. Mary's second goal as she slotted a pass to the far right post where senior forward Mary Lyle Jeanes (Orange, Va./Orange County) deflected it in for her fourth of the year at 43:59.

The Spartans came alive in the second half, securing 10 penalty corners and forcing senior Emily Richards (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) to make a couple of split saves at either post.  But York (4-9, 2-4 CAC) was unable to capitalize on those opportunities.

St. Mary's finished with a 15-8 shot advantage, while the Spartans held a 13-5 margin on penalty corners.

Richards ended the game with a pair of saves in her fourth shutout, while sophomore Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford) made six stops in the loss for YCP.

The Seahawks will return to action Tuesday, October 2 when SMCM travels to Chestertown, Maryland to take on Washington (Md.) College in non-conference action at 7:00.  York will host Gwynedd-Mercy College in its next game on October 3 at 4:00.
