St. Mary's Explodes for 4-2 Win over McDaniel

St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team found the back of the net four times in posting a 4-2 victory over the visiting Green Terror of McDaniel on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.  Four different players scored for the Seahawks as SMCM improved to 1-1 on the season.

St. Mary's posted a 1-0 halftime lead following junior forward Lauren Carrier's (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) unassisted goal at 16:31.

After the 15-minute intermission, the Seahawks tacked on two more goals in a four-minute span.  Sophomore Erika Kenny (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) sparked the scoring as she converted a feed from junior midfielder Katie Klotz (Bowie, Md./Good Counsel) at 49:36.  Sophomore defender Tessa Searle (Olney, Md./Sherwood) followed suit as Searle punted back a cleared ball over the sophomore keeper Leanne Hollinger's (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) head for a 3-0 Seahawk lead.

McDaniel avoided the shutout as sophomore midfielder Melanie Armstrong (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) converted on a free kick at 53:28.  St. Mary's answered back as sophomore defender Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) chipped one in at 68:09.  The Green Terror got within two once again when sophomore forward Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) slid one past junior Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's-Annapolis) at 76:30.

Oben gave up both goals and made one save, while freshman Elizabeth Benge (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) had a save in 13:29 minutes of reserve action.  Hollinger turned away 17 shots in the loss.

St. Mary's dominated the contest with 36 shots and seven corner kicks, while the Green Terror had only four shots and no corner kicks.

The Seahawks return to action on Friday-Saturday, September 7-8 when SMCM travels to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the Mule Classic hosted by Muhlenberg College.  The Hawks will take on Misericordia University on Friday at 5:00 followed by the University of Scranton on Saturday at 3:00.  McDaniel will host Frostburg State University on September 8 at 3:00 for its next game.
