St. Mary's Remains Undefeated with 3-1 Victory over Catholic

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team continues its hot streak, staking their perfect record to 5-0 with Wednesday night's non-conference 3-1 (28-30, 30-14, 30-15, 30-23) win over Catholic University.

The Seahawks are one game away from matching the program's best start which was a 6-0 run by the 1992 squad.  That season, St. Mary's finished 25-6 for the year.

Catholic (2-3) was the first team to take a game away from the Hawks as the Cardinals claimed a hard-fought 30-28 win in the first game.  The Cardinal offense combined for 18 kills in the victory.

However, St. Mary's regrouped and captured the next two games without much question, taking them by scores of 30-14 and 30-15, respectively.  In game two, the Hawks made no errors in their hitting as SMCM connected on 13 kills in 33 attempts.

St. Mary's jumped out to an 8-4 lead before the Cardinals began playing it tight, coming within 14-13.  The Seahawks began to pull away at that point and boasted a 22-17 advantage before Catholic called a timeout.  The pep talk helped as the Cardinals posted four consecutive kills to make it 23-21 SMCM.  But the Hawks weren't done yet as St. Mary's closed out the game on a 7-2 run to win the fourth and final game.

Three players were in double digits for the Seahawks in kills as sophomore Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led the way with 14, junior Becca Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) added 13, and freshman Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) chipped in 10.

Gregorini completed the double-double with 20 digs and junior outside hitter Kellie Krouse (Baltimore, Md./Towson) put up 21.  Sophomore setter Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) dished out 31 assists and collected 13 digs.

Catholic was led in the loss by sophomore Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) who posted a double-double of 28 digs and 16 kills.

The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, September 8 when St. Mary's hosts a tri-match with Randolph-Macon College and Lebanon Valley College in the Athletic & Recreation Center Arena.  The Hawks first match will be at 11:00 a.m. against Randolph-Macon.

Catholic's next game will be on Friday versus Johns Hopkins University at 3:00 at the Gettysburg College Tournament.
