No. 9 JHU Blanks St. Mary's, 3-0

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Freshman midfielder Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, Mass./Bourne) notched his first career two-goal game as Bukoski led ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University to a 3-0 shutout of St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

After 42:18 minutes of scoreless first half play, Bukoski finally disrupted the stalemate with his second goal of the season.  He played the ball to the left of the St. Mary's defender inside the box and then right-footed a shot into the lower right corner.  Hopkins' 1-0 lead held until halftime.

St. Mary's (1-2) mounted a strong attack in the second half, firing off 10 shots but the Seahawks were unable to capitalize as a couple of those shots just went wide of the goal.  The SMCM defense held the Blue Jays (3-0) scoreless and to only one corner kick (after JHU received seven in the first half) for 30 minutes before Hopkins netted its second of the day.

Sophomore Chand Balfour (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) took a quick feed from senior forward Ben McAbee (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) just in front of the goal and chipped it in for a 2-0 match at 74:50.

Bukoski made the final 3-0 when he tallied another unassisted goal from the top of the box at 80:31.

The Blue Jays finished with eight shots on goal and eight corner kicks, while St. Mary's had six shots on goal and five corner kicks.

Seahawk senior Rick Besore (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha Catholic) made five saves in the loss, while sophomore Matt Mierley (Weston, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) turned away five shots.

SMCM hopes to return to its winning ways on Saturday, September 8 when the Hawks host Marymount (Va.) University in their Capital Athletic Conference opener at 2:00.  Johns Hopkins' next game will be on Saturday as well when the Blue Jays host Washington & Lee University at 7:00.
