Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and sophomore
guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) each dropped 21 points and as a team, the St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's basketball team registered a season-high 27
steals en route to a 73-49 triumph over Trinity (D.C.) University
Monday night to snap a two-game losing streak.
Half of St. Mary's eight-person roster notched three or more
steals in the contest with Scott leading the way with her
career-high seven steals. Junior forward Kiely
Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) was not far behind Scott
as Murphy picked a career-best six pockets.
Trinity (2-12) bested the Seahawks (8-5) in the first half as
the Tigers boasted a 34-28 halftime lead. After sophomore
guard Preshuse Jackson (Temple Hills, Md.) gave TU
an early 3-0 lead, St. Mary's posted a 19-7 run for its biggest
lead of the half at 14:26 (19-10).
A 19-9 run by Trinity gave the Tigers a 29-28 advantage with
2:02 remaining as freshman forward Morgan Kellman
(Middletown, Md.) connected on a pair of free throws. A
jumper by senior center Ashley West (Forestville,
Md.) and a three-pointer by Jackson gave TU its six-point margin at
halftime.
Murphy and Saint-Aubin each had 11 first-half points, while
Jackson paced the Tigers with 11 as well. Trinity was hot
from the field, making 14 of 26 attempts for a 53.8 field goal
percentage in the half.
The Seahawks forced 23 second half turnovers as Trinity finished
the game with a total of 38 turnovers. A 12-0 run to start
the second stanza helped St. Mary's reclaim the lead for good with
15:57 left in the game. Once the Seahawks had the lead, the
Tigers never got any closer than five as SMCM sported a
double-digit margin for the last 10:43 of the game.
Scott recorded her third double-double of the season with 21 and
a game-high 10 rebounds. Both Scott and Saint-Aubin were
9-of-15 from the field with Saint-Aubin going 2-of-3 from
downtown. Murphy matched her season-best with 18 points on
7-of-17 shooting, including three treys. Senior guard
Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) dished out a
game- and season-high eight assists.
Jackson ended the night with a dozen points and four steals,
while junior forward Danielle Owens (Washington,
D.C.) had a double-double on 10 points and 10 caroms. West
also finished with 10 boards and added nine points.
St. Mary's will to return to action on Wednesday when the
Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to face Capital Athletic
Conference opponent, Gallaudet University, at 8:00. Trinity
will travel to Frederick, Md. on Wednesday as well to take on Hood
College at 7:00.
