Washington, D.C. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team collected another
'W' as two second-half goals helped the Seahawks (4-6-4,
3-2-2) secure a 3-0 shutout of Gallaudet University Monday night in
Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.
After receiving the ball at the near left post, freshman
midfielder Brian Payne (Baltimore, Md./Calvert
Hall) netted the first half's only goal at 12:23 as
Payne settled the ball, beat a Bison defender and
then slid it past Poloko Qobose.
Freshman forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie,
Md./Mt. St. Joseph) gave St. Mary's a 2-0 advantage at 52:17 as
Quamina finished off a short cross from freshman
forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John
the Baptist), sending the ball into the upper right corner.
The game's final tally came at 71:16 when junior forward
Misha Simon (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel)
blasted in his team-leading fifth goal of the season from about 25
yards out.
The Seahawks outshot Gallaudet (0-14, 0-6 CAC), 42-3, and posted
a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
There was no need for sophomore Paul Spranklin
(Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) to make a save in the first half as
Gallaudet's only shot of the first 45 minutes went wide.
Freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara)
recorded a pair of saves as Gressang replaced
Spranklin at the start of the second half.
Qobose finished the night with nine stops in
the Bison loss.
St. Mary's will be back in action this Thursday, October 16 when
the Seahawks travel to Ashland, Va. to take on non-conference
opponent, Randolph-Macon College, at 4:00.
