St. Mary's City, Md. - The No. 22 Salisbury
University volleyball team captured the Fourth Annual Seahawk
Invitational hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland with a 4-0
tournament record and having won 12 of 14 sets played. St.
Mary's (23-6) took third in the invitational with a 2-2 mark and
captured nine of 15 games played.
Virginia Wesleyan College (21-10) also finished with a 4-0 mark
and won 12 of 15 sets played, while Marietta College (15-16) posted
a 2-2 record and notched wins in seven sets out of 14.
Rounding out the tournament standings were Neumann College (14-15)
and Gwynedd-Mercy College (4-21).

After an exhausting Friday night, St. Mary's did not have
any easy start to its second day of competition in its own
invitational as the Seahawks dropped a 3-2 (13-25, 25-20, 25-22,
22-25, 18-16) decision to Virginia Wesleyan. SMCM picked up a
quick 25-13 first set win before the Marlins came back with two
straight set victories to go up 2-1. The Hawks then knotted
the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set; however,
VWC outlasted the Seahawks in the fifth, 18-16.
All-Tournament pick, sophomore outside hitter Rebecca
Leedom (Virginia Beach, Va.), controlled the VWC offense
with a match-high 21 kills and 11 digs, while freshman libero
Erin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) racked
up a match-best 29 digs.
Junior outside hitter Katie Ewing
(Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) had a team-best 17 kills and
seven block assists, while senior middle blocker Becca
Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) contributed a dozen
kills, five digs, four block assists, and three aces. Junior
outside hitter Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) led four Seahawks in double-figure digs with 18 and
contributed nine kills.

A balanced attack helped St. Mary's register a sweep
against Gwynedd-Mercy by the scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-19 to wrap
up Invitational competition. Ewing performed
well once again as she registered a .643 attack percentage on nine
kills, no errors and 14 attempts, while Tursell
notched seven kills. Sophomore outside hitter Katie
Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) added six kills and
Gregorini recorded 11 digs as well as five kills.
Senior outside hitter Kailee Davis (Cheltenham,
Pa./Bishop McDevitt) led the Griffins with seven kills followed by
junior middle hitter Jessica Rufe (Warrington,
Pa./Archbishop Wood) with six. Senior outside hitter
Monica Taylor (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent),
an All-Tournament pick, had 10 digs in the loss.
