Seahawks Have No Trouble with Wesley

Dover, Del. - A balanced attacked allowed the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team to tally a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-18) sweep of Wesley College Wednesday night as the Seahawks (20-4, 5-0 CAC) remained perfect in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Sophomore outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) paced St. Mary's in the win with eight kills, while fellow classmate Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) added seven digs and three kills.

In the first set, the Seahawks rolled out to a 12-5 advantage behind four kills and three service aces.  Junior setter Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) closed out first set by serving the last six points of the game en route to the 25-10 win.  Feldmann went on to finish the match with five service aces and 18 assists.

The second set was tied at 7-7 before St. Mary's used a 10-4 run to take control of the game and post a 25-14 win.  Kodan led the attack with five kills, while junior outside hitter Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) chipped in three.  Ewing would leave Wesley with six kills for the match.

Feldmann helped the Seahawks to a 7-0 start in the final set, serving up three aces in the run.  However, a 14-11 chase put Wesley (10-12, 1-4 CAC) within four, forcing St. Mary's to call a timeout and recompose themselves.  Obal sealed the 25-18 win as she notched a pair of kills and a service ace.

Aiding the SMCM cause were junior defensive specialist Allyssa Blackburn (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) with six digs and freshman outside hitter Shannon Fitzpatrick (Germantown, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) with five kills.  Senior middle blocker Becca Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) contributed four kills and three total blocks (1 BS, 2 BA), while senior setter Megan Graydon (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg) handed out 13 assists.

The Wolverines were led by junior outside hitter Lilia Brekke's (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) five kills and freshman Sophie Reed's (Dover, Del./St. Thomas More) three kills and two digs.

St. Mary's will return to action next Thursday, October 16 when the Seahawks travel to Stevenson, Md. to take on Stevenson University in an important league match-up at 7:00.
