Dover, Del. - A balanced
attacked allowed the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team
to tally a 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-18) sweep of Wesley College
Wednesday night as the Seahawks (20-4, 5-0 CAC) remained perfect in
Capital Athletic Conference action.
Sophomore outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney,
Md./Sherwood) paced St. Mary's in the win with eight kills, while
fellow classmate Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood)
added seven digs and three kills.
In the first set, the Seahawks rolled out to a 12-5 advantage
behind four kills and three service aces. Junior setter
Jenn Feldmann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial)
closed out first set by serving the last six points of the game en
route to the 25-10 win. Feldmann went on to
finish the match with five service aces and 18 assists.
The second set was tied at 7-7 before St. Mary's used a 10-4 run
to take control of the game and post a 25-14 win.
Kodan led the attack with five kills, while junior
outside hitter Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg,
Md./Quince Orchard) chipped in three. Ewing
would leave Wesley with six kills for the match.
Feldmann helped the Seahawks to a 7-0 start in
the final set, serving up three aces in the run. However, a
14-11 chase put Wesley (10-12, 1-4 CAC) within four, forcing St.
Mary's to call a timeout and recompose themselves.
Obal sealed the 25-18 win as she notched a pair of
kills and a service ace.
Aiding the SMCM cause were junior defensive specialist
Allyssa Blackburn (Lexington Park, Md./Great
Mills) with six digs and freshman outside hitter Shannon
Fitzpatrick (Germantown, Md./St. John's College [D.C.])
with five kills. Senior middle blocker Becca
Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg) contributed four
kills and three total blocks (1 BS, 2 BA), while senior setter
Megan Graydon (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg)
handed out 13 assists.
The Wolverines were led by junior outside hitter Lilia
Brekke's (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) five kills and
freshman Sophie Reed's (Dover, Del./St. Thomas
More) three kills and two digs.
St. Mary's will return to action next Thursday, October 16 when
the Seahawks travel to Stevenson, Md. to take on Stevenson
University in an important league match-up at 7:00.
