St. Mary's City, Md. - The Shorewomen of
Washington (Md.) College overcame an 11-point first half deficit en
route to a 61-55 non-conference victory over the St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's basketball team Friday night.
The loss extends St. Mary's (1-3) losing streak to three
straight as the Seahawks now prepare for their first road game of
the season in Newport News, Va. against Christopher Newport
University on Tuesday, November 25 at 7:00.
Washington's junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape
May Court House, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) dropped a game-high 23
points in 37 minutes of play as the Shorewomen (1-0) opened up the
2008-09 campaign with a win. The win also marked the first
for Washington's first-year head coach Megan
Duran.
Turnover and free throw woes continued for St. Mary's as the
team committed 24 for the game and made just seven of their 17 free
throw attempts. The Seahawks' three losses have each been by
seven or less points.
St. Mary's started the first half strong, jumping out to a quick
10-4 lead behind six points from sophomore center Tiara
Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). The Seahawks shot
a blistering 61.5% from the field in the first stanza, including
making two of three long range shots, as they worked to keep
Washington at a distance. St. Mary's led by as many as 11
with 3:55 remaining until halftime. However,
O'Donnell ignited a 10-2 run with five points to
put the Shorewomen within 36-33 at halftime.
O'Donnell notched 12 of her 23 points in the
first half as she went 2-of-3 from downtown. For the
Seahawks, senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) paced her squad with 10 points.
St. Mary's worked an 11-5 spurt to triple their halftime lead
and then hovered around a nine-point lead until the 10:32 mark when
the Shorewomen used a 14-3 push to claim their first lead of the
game at 3:48 (56-54) as freshman guard Megan Tait
(Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area), who was 0-for-2 in the first half, came
alive for seven points in the run. Washington went on to
close out the game with a 6-1 margin for the victory.
O'Donnell was the only Shorewoman to finish in
double digits, while senior guard Brianne
Slizofski (Collegeville, Pa./St. Pius X) added nine points
and eight rebounds. Tait finished with her
seven second-half points and dished out a game-high seven assists.
Hurte registered her first double-double of the
season on team-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while
Scott finished with 12 as well after being held to
just two points in the second stanza. Sophomore guard
Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) added 10
points, while senior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney,
Md./Good Counsel) matched her career-best with six assists.
