St. Mary's City, Md. - The Shorewomen of Washington (Md.) College overcame an 11-point first half deficit en route to a 61-55 non-conference victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team Friday night.

The loss extends St. Mary's (1-3) losing streak to three straight as the Seahawks now prepare for their first road game of the season in Newport News, Va. against Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, November 25 at 7:00.

Washington's junior guard Jane O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) dropped a game-high 23 points in 37 minutes of play as the Shorewomen (1-0) opened up the 2008-09 campaign with a win.  The win also marked the first for Washington's first-year head coach Megan Duran.

Turnover and free throw woes continued for St. Mary's as the team committed 24 for the game and made just seven of their 17 free throw attempts.  The Seahawks' three losses have each been by seven or less points.

St. Mary's started the first half strong, jumping out to a quick 10-4 lead behind six points from sophomore center Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall).  The Seahawks shot a blistering 61.5% from the field in the first stanza, including making two of three long range shots, as they worked to keep Washington at a distance.  St. Mary's led by as many as 11 with 3:55 remaining until halftime.  However, O'Donnell ignited a 10-2 run with five points to put the Shorewomen within 36-33 at halftime.

O'Donnell notched 12 of her 23 points in the first half as she went 2-of-3 from downtown.  For the Seahawks, senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) paced her squad with 10 points.

St. Mary's worked an 11-5 spurt to triple their halftime lead and then hovered around a nine-point lead until the 10:32 mark when the Shorewomen used a 14-3 push to claim their first lead of the game at 3:48 (56-54) as freshman guard Megan Tait (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area), who was 0-for-2 in the first half, came alive for seven points in the run.  Washington went on to close out the game with a 6-1 margin for the victory.

O'Donnell was the only Shorewoman to finish in double digits, while senior guard Brianne Slizofski (Collegeville, Pa./St. Pius X) added nine points and eight rebounds.  Tait finished with her seven second-half points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Hurte registered her first double-double of the season on team-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Scott finished with 12 as well after being held to just two points in the second stanza.  Sophomore guard Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) added 10 points, while senior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) matched her career-best with six assists.
