Stevenson, Md. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team put an end to
their five-game losing skid with a 56-45 road victory over
Stevenson University Wednesday night in the Capital Athletic
Conference (CAC) opener for both squads.
St. Mary's senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) led all players with her second consecutive
double-double on a dozen points and a season-best 14 rebounds,
while sophomore guard Megan Seeman (Frederick,
Md./Linganore) matched her career-high with 13 points off the
bench.
In the first half, the score was tied four times before a lay-up
by freshman guard Bethany Townsend (Accokeek,
Md./Gwynn Park) at 6:28 gave the Seahawks (2-5, 1-0 CAC) the lead
for good. Senior guard Tara Galvin's
(Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) three-pointer a minute later helped
Stevenson pull within one but five straight points from
Seeman secured SMCM's 26-21 halftime lead.
Seeman led all players at intermission with
seven points, while sophomore guard Jamie Roberts
(Rockville, Md./Barrie) contributed six by going 4-for-4 at the
charity stripe. Galvin paced her squad with
six points.
St. Mary's bested its season-high in free throw percentage set
in a non-conference loss to Shenandoah University on November 30
with a 70.8% effort tonight, knocking down 17 of 24 attempts in the
game.
The Seahawks established a 33-23 advantage in the first five
minutes of the second half before the Mustangs (1-4, 0-1 CAC) used
a 13-4 run to come within one with 8:24 left in the game as
freshmen Qianna Coleman (Ellicott City, Md./Mt.
Hebron) and Joy Bettis (Laurel, Md./Montrose
Christian) each tallied four points in the run. St. Mary's
held back the comeback rally with a 12-2 push of its own to seal
the 56-45 conference win.
Roberts finished the evening with her six
first-half points and dished out a career-best four assists, while
sophomore forward Tiara Hurte (Baltimore,
Md./Perry Hall) chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
For Stevenson, Coleman ended the evening as her
team's leading scorer with eight points after coming up with six
second-half points off the bench. Freshman guard
Breonna Brewer (Baltimore, Md./Polytechnic)
contributed seven points, while sophomore Denita
Brown (Laurel, Md./Montrose Christian) hauled in six
boards and blocked five Seahawk shots.
St. Mary's next match-up will be tough as the Seahawks host No.
15/16 Marymount (Va.) University this Saturday, December 6 in the
first half of a CAC doubleheader with the Saints. Tip-off for
the women's game is set for 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00.
