St. Mary's Snaps Losing Streak

Box Score

Stevenson, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team put an end to their five-game losing skid with a 56-45 road victory over Stevenson University Wednesday night in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) opener for both squads.

St. Mary's senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) led all players with her second consecutive double-double on a dozen points and a season-best 14 rebounds, while sophomore guard Megan Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore) matched her career-high with 13 points off the bench.

In the first half, the score was tied four times before a lay-up by freshman guard Bethany Townsend (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) at 6:28 gave the Seahawks (2-5, 1-0 CAC) the lead for good.  Senior guard Tara Galvin's (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) three-pointer a minute later helped Stevenson pull within one but five straight points from Seeman secured SMCM's 26-21 halftime lead.

Seeman led all players at intermission with seven points, while sophomore guard Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) contributed six by going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.  Galvin paced her squad with six points.

St. Mary's bested its season-high in free throw percentage set in a non-conference loss to Shenandoah University on November 30 with a 70.8% effort tonight, knocking down 17 of 24 attempts in the game.

The Seahawks established a 33-23 advantage in the first five minutes of the second half before the Mustangs (1-4, 0-1 CAC) used a 13-4 run to come within one with 8:24 left in the game as freshmen Qianna Coleman (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and Joy Bettis (Laurel, Md./Montrose Christian) each tallied four points in the run.  St. Mary's held back the comeback rally with a 12-2 push of its own to seal the 56-45 conference win.

Roberts finished the evening with her six first-half points and dished out a career-best four assists, while sophomore forward Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.

For Stevenson, Coleman ended the evening as her team's leading scorer with eight points after coming up with six second-half points off the bench.  Freshman guard Breonna Brewer (Baltimore, Md./Polytechnic) contributed seven points, while sophomore Denita Brown (Laurel, Md./Montrose Christian) hauled in six boards and blocked five Seahawk shots.

St. Mary's next match-up will be tough as the Seahawks host No. 15/16 Marymount (Va.) University this Saturday, December 6 in the first half of a CAC doubleheader with the Saints.  Tip-off for the women's game is set for 2:00 with the men to follow at 4:00.
