St. Mary's City, Md. - The Marymount (Va.)
University women's basketball team was too much for St. Mary's
College of Maryland to handle as the No. 15/16 Saints tallied an
89-66 Capital Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon with
four of their starters in double digits.
Marymount's senior Carolyn Riley (Warrenton,
Va./Liberty) led the offensive charge with a game-high 22 points on
9-of-14 shooting. The Saints, who were ranked 15th in the
USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll and 16th in the
D3hoops.com Top 25, remain undefeated on the young season with a
5-0, 2-0 CAC record.
Marymount never trailed in the game as the Saints connected on
more than half of their attempts in each half, including shooting
58.8% from the floor in the first stanza, to finish the game with a
56.5-field goal percentage. The team was also strong from the
perimeter, making 5-of-12 three-pointers as Riley
and junior guard Meredith Levison (E. Rockaway,
N.Y./E. Rockaway) each had a pair.
The Saints owned a 48-27 halftime advantage with 24 points
coming off St. Mary's 15 first-half turnovers.
Riley had 16 points in the first 20 minutes to
lead all players, while junior forward Kathleen
Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) picked up a
dozen. The Seahawks were led by senior forward Kiely
Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and sophomore guard
Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) as both had
seven points.
Marymount continued its dominance in the second half, leading by
as much as 28 with 5:48 left in the game.
Brown finished with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting,
while senior guard Kathryn Wilson (Richmond,
Va./Saint Gertrude) added 15 points and seven boards.
Levison contributed a dozen and seven rebounds.
The Seahawks (2-6, 1-1 CAC) out-rebounded Marymount, 44-39, as
senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton)
picked up her third straight double-double on a game-high 10
rebounds and team-best 15 points. Roberts
notched a season-high 14 points, while Murphy had
10 points, seven boards, and two blocks.
St. Mary's returns to action in the New Year as the Seahawks
will host Misericordia University in non-conference action Monday,
January 5, 2009 at 6:00.
