Dover, Del. - The St. Mary's
College of Maryland field hockey team rebounded from Tuesday's
overtime loss with a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over
the host Wesley College Wolverines Saturday afternoon behind goals
from sophomores Katie Cox (Frederick,
Md./Linganore) and Allie Skiest (Arnold, Md./Seton
Keough).
Cox put the Seahawks (3-2, 2-1 CAC) on the
board first at 8:11 with her first tally of the season as
Cox completed a feed from senior captain
Emily Smithson (Richmond, Va./James River).
Wesley (4-3, 0-1 CAC) responded less than two minutes later as
freshman Sheree Pleasanton (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna)
notched her fourth goal of 2008 at 9:57 unassisted.
Skiest gave St. Mary's the win five minutes
before halftime as she tallied an unassisted goal for her first
score of the season.
In the second half, both teams combined for 13 shots and the
Wolverines were awarded five penalty corners but neither team was
able to make anything stick and the final remained the same as the
first half score.
The Seahawks outshot Wesley, 16-10, while WC held an 11-5
advantage on corners.
Sophomore Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor)
recorded six saves in the victory, while sophomore Sarah
Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) picked up five stops
in the Wolverine loss.
The Seahawks will be back in action next Wednesday, September 17
when St. Mary's travels to Fredericksburg, Va. for another CAC tilt
against the University of Mary Washington at 4:00.
