Elizabethtown, Pa. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team won 13 straight before
dropping only their second match of the season at the two-day 2008
Mizuno Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College this past
weekend.
The Seahawks (16-2) posted victories over Widener University
(3-1) and Lycoming College (3-0) on Friday then started off
Saturday with a five-set loss to Carnegie Mellon University.
St. Mary's rebounded with a 3-1 win over Neumann College to finish
third at the Classic.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) was named to the All-Tournament Team after
finishing the weekend with 48 digs and 43 kills as well as seven
aces.
Gregorini paced the Seahawks in their 3-1
(26-24, 25-19, 17-25, 25-18) win over Widener, while senior middle
blocker Becca Tursell (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg)
added 11. Both Gregorini and
Tursell posted a .400 attack percentage, while
Tursell served up three aces.
Sophomore outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney,
Md./Sherwood) racked up 17 digs, while Gregorini
contributed 13.
For Widener (13-4), junior Devan Green had a
team-high 13 kills, while freshman setter Jamie
Ballew dished out a match-high 36 assists.
Tursell registered nine kills, six aces and
four total blocks in helping SMCM sweep (25-21, 25-8, 25-19)
Lycoming (8-6). Kodan had another 17-dig
performance, while chipping in seven kills and three service aces.
Freshman defensive specialist Emily Abel was
the highlight for Lycoming as Abel recorded 29 of
the Warriors' 70 digs.
Gregorini stepped up her play against Carnegie
Mellon (10-10) as the Seahawks had their 13-match win streak
snapped with a 3-2 (25-18, 27-29, 25-13, 22-25, 10-15)
setback. She notched a double-double with 13 kills and a
dozen digs, while Tursell tallied eight total
blocks and added five kills. Kodan also had
a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs as well as five total
blocks. Senior libero Jackie Reid
(Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) also picked up 16 digs.
CMU was led by senior middle hitter Chisom
Amaechi who had 13 kills, while sophomore Aislinn
McCloskey added 10. Senior Liz
DeVleming handed out 45 assists and sophomore
Cameron Griffin tallied 28 digs.
Gregorini and junior outside hitter
Katie Ewing (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard)
starred for SMCM in the 3-1 (30-32, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21) triumph
over Neumann to take third at the tournament.
Gregorini had a double-double with 13 kills and 10
digs, while Ewing contributed 10 kills.
Reid and Kodan both notched 15
digs.
