Game Program

St. Mary's City, Md. - Catholic University escaped Seahawk Stadium with a 3-2 victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon as junior forward Matt Brady (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) put back the rebound from freshman defender Brian White's (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) shot that had come off the crossbar into the lower left corner with 59.8 seconds remaining in the game.

Catholic (7-1) posted a 1-0 lead at 27:03 as junior midfielder Brian Pappas (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) fired in a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner after receiving a pass from sophomore defender Tim Brady (Howell, N.J./Christian Brothers).

The Cardinals held on to their 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the relatively quiet first half.

However, fireworks began to fly in the second half as eight cards were issued, including four in the final nine minutes of the match.  Catholic also had one player ejected for fighting, leaving the Cardinals shorthanded for the final 8:27 of the game.

CUA upped its lead to 2-0 at 57:10 as M. Brady sent back in a rebound that had come off a St. Mary's defender.

The Seahawks (2-5-3) began to claw their way back at 68:37 when freshman forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) put the finishing touches on a chip shot from fellow classmate Brian Payne (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) who had received a quick, short pass from freshman forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist).

The equalizer came at 76:49 when freshman defender Drew Gainey (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) volleyed in a long pass from the 50 into the box where senior Cyrus Albertson (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) flicked it past sophomore Quinn Daly (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine).

Shots for the game were even at 16 apiece, while Catholic held a 5-2 margin in corner kicks.

Sophomore Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) finished the afternoon with five stops for St. Mary's, while Daly ended with five saves as well.

St. Mary's will be back in action this Saturday, October 4 as the Seahawks return to conference play against Marymount (Va.) University at 8:00 p.m.  Saturday's match-up will take place at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington.
