St. Mary's City, Md. - The University of Mary
Washington women's basketball team used a balanced attack to easily
dispose of St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon as the
nationally-ranked Eagles notched a 66-39 win in Capital Athletic
Conference action. Mary Washington came into this afternoon's
match-up ranked No. 21 in the USA Today ESPN/WBCA Top 25
and No. 22 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 polls.
In a game that was marred by 48 turnovers and 43 personal fouls
between the two squads, Mary Washington (12-2, 4-1 CAC) dominated
the contest from start to finish as the Eagles picked up their
third straight victory.
The Eagles flew off to a 36-20 halftime lead after opening the
contest with a 13-3 run. Mary Washington's freshman guard
Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va./Annandale) led all
players at the half with 10 points off the bench on 4-of-5
shooting, while senior guard Katy Larson
(McGaheysville, Va./Spotswood) added nine rebounds and eight
points.
Sophomore guard Jamie Roberts (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) paced St. Mary's (3-10, 2-4 CAC) with nine first-half
points as Roberts was 7-of-8 from the charity
stripe.
Sub par shooting hindered the Seahawks as St. Mary's went
8-of-35 from the floor for the game, including a 0-for-4 effort
from downtown.
McRae finished the afternoon with a game-high
16 points on 7-of-8 shooting before fouling out, while freshman
guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
added 11 points and four steals. Larson
contributed a game-best 11 boards along with her eight first-half
points.
Roberts and senior forward Allie
Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) were the only two Seahawks in
twin figures. Roberts led the way with 14
after going 8-of-11 from the free throw line, while
Scott had 10 on 8-of-10 shooting from the line.
St. Mary's returns to action this coming Monday, January 19 as
the Seahawks host Gallaudet University in another CAC tilt at
noon. The women's game is the first of a CAC doubleheader as
the men will square off against the Bison at 2:00.
