St. Mary's City, Md. - Sophomore guard
Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./Barrie) notched a
game-high 13 points in 18 minutes as the St. Mary's College of
Maryland women's basketball team picked up a 44-37 victory over
Stevenson University in Capital Athletic Conference action Thursday
night to sweep the series.
Stevenson (4-14, 2-7 CAC) raced off to an 8-1 lead at 15:40
before the Seahawks went 4-of-4 from the free throw line and senior
forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) hit
a three-pointer to knot the contest at 8 all at 13:13. The
Mustangs built their lead back up to 15-8 and held on for a 19-15
advantage at intermission.
Stevenson's sophomore guard Melissa Robinson
(Temple Hills, Md./Potomac) tallied five first-half points, while
junior center Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) and sophomore guard Megan Seeman (Frederick,
Md./Linganore) paced St. Mary's with five points apiece.
The Seahawks (6-11, 4-5 CAC) used a 9-4 run to stake their claim
on the lead in second stanza. Roberts went
7-of-8 from the charity stripe in a three-minute span to help her
team establish a 29-25 lead at 11:25. SMCM went on to post a
38-30 margin with 5:09 remaining in the game.
Senior forward Tori Whitlow (Sterling,
Va./Potomac Falls) hauled in a career-high eight rebounds and added
seven points to aide in St. Mary's winning cause.
For Stevenson, guards Tara Galvin (Lititz,
Pa./Manheim Township) and Breonna Brewer
(Baltimore, Md./Polytechnic) each finished with seven points, while
sophomore forward Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston) grabbed a game-high nine boards.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, January 31 when
the Seahawks travel to Arlington, Virginia to face No. 25 Marymount
University in a CAC tilt at 4:00. In their first meeting of
the season, St. Mary's suffered an 89-66 setback in the ARC Arena
on December 6 as senior forward Allie Scott
(Laurel, Md./Atholton) and Roberts combined for 29
points.
