Salisbury Flies Past St. Mary's

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior midfielder Kyle Sterling (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) notched a hat trick plus an assist in leading Salisbury University to a 5-1 Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's (4-9, 2-5 CAC) played the Sea Gulls tight in the first half as Salisbury posted a 2-1 halftime.  The Sea Gulls (10-2-1, 4-0-1 CAC) struck first at 18:22 as senior midfielder Benjamin Reed (Arnold, Md./Severna Park) beat a couple of defenders on the left side and found the lower right corner for his fifth goal of the season.  Forty-three seconds later, Salisbury went up 2-0 as Reed slotted a pass through to Sterling and Sterling fired into the lower right corner.

The Seahawks cut the lead to one at 23:28 when sophomore forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) sent in a short pass to the top of the box and senior forward Benard Agyingi (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) struck the ball into the lower left corner.

The second half slipped away from St. Mary's as the Sea Gulls tacked on three more goals.  Junior midfielder Dave Corrigan (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) started the scoring at 49:36 as Corrigan found the back of the net at the far right post following a diagonal cross from Sterling.

Sterling tallied the final two goals of the contest as he converted on his second penalty kick of the season at 53:47 and followed that up with an unassisted goal at 65:12 for the 5-1 final.

Salisbury, ranked fifth in the South Atlantic region, outshot the Seahawks, 24 to 11, while corner kicks were even at seven apiece.

Senior Joshua Scotton (Delmar, Md./Delmar) gave up the Seahawks' only goal of the game and made two saves in 71:38 before senior Greg Wellinghoff (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) came in relief.

Junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) registered 10 saves and five goals against in 71:38 before junior Matt Savopoulos (Scaggsville, Md./Reservoir) finished out the game with one stop.

The Seahawks will return to action next Tuesday, October 13 as St. Mary's hosts No. 13 Swarthmore College to Seahawk Stadium on Senior Day for non-conference action at 4:00 pm.

Salisbury will travel to Arlington, Va. for its next match as the Sea Gulls will take on Marymount (Va.) University in a league tilt at 7:30 pm.
