St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior midfielder
Kyle Sterling (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett)
notched a hat trick plus an assist in leading Salisbury University
to a 5-1 Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over St.
Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (4-9, 2-5 CAC) played the Sea Gulls tight in the
first half as Salisbury posted a 2-1 halftime. The Sea Gulls
(10-2-1, 4-0-1 CAC) struck first at 18:22 as senior midfielder
Benjamin Reed (Arnold, Md./Severna Park) beat a
couple of defenders on the left side and found the lower right
corner for his fifth goal of the season. Forty-three seconds
later, Salisbury went up 2-0 as Reed slotted a
pass through to Sterling and
Sterling fired into the lower right corner.
The Seahawks cut the lead to one at 23:28 when sophomore forward
Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the
Baptist) sent in a short pass to the top of the box and senior
forward Benard Agyingi (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar)
struck the ball into the lower left corner.
The second half slipped away from St. Mary's as the Sea Gulls
tacked on three more goals. Junior midfielder Dave
Corrigan (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) started the
scoring at 49:36 as Corrigan found the back of the
net at the far right post following a diagonal cross from
Sterling.
Sterling tallied the final two goals of the
contest as he converted on his second penalty kick of the season at
53:47 and followed that up with an unassisted goal at 65:12 for the
5-1 final.
Salisbury, ranked fifth in the South Atlantic region, outshot
the Seahawks, 24 to 11, while corner kicks were even at seven
apiece.
Senior Joshua Scotton (Delmar, Md./Delmar) gave
up the Seahawks' only goal of the game and made two saves in 71:38
before senior Greg Wellinghoff (Salisbury,
Md./James M. Bennett) came in relief.
Junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland
Mills) registered 10 saves and five goals against in 71:38 before
junior Matt Savopoulos (Scaggsville,
Md./Reservoir) finished out the game with one stop.
The Seahawks will return to action next Tuesday, October 13 as
St. Mary's hosts No. 13 Swarthmore College to Seahawk Stadium on
Senior Day for non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
Salisbury will travel to Arlington, Va. for its next match as
the Sea Gulls will take on Marymount (Va.) University in a league
tilt at 7:30 pm.
