Back-to-back double-doubles from junior outside hitter
Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) led the St.
Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team to a 2-0 mark at
Saturday's tri-match hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College as the
Seahawks snapped their two-match losing streak.
St. Mary's (13-9) opened up Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win
over Eastern Mennonite University (10-14) as the Seahawks overcame
a 25-23 first set loss and claimed 25-23, 25-11, and 25-21
victories in the subsequent sets.
Kodan registered her first double-double of the
day with 13 kills and 11 digs as she was the only Seahawk to notch
double-digit kills. She also equaled her career-high with
five service aces. Junior setter Katie Obal
(Olney, Md./Sherwood) dished out 37 assists with three digs, one
ace, and one block solo.
Senior middle blocker Jen Lamar (Collegeville,
Pa./Spring-Ford) commanded the team's 11.0 total blocks as
Lamar recorded three block solos and five block
assists, while adding eight kills.
Senior outside hitter Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) paced the defensive effort with 17 digs,
while freshman Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C.
Williams) added 10.
In their second match of the day, the Seahawks posted a four-set
win over host Virginia Wesleyan (21-5), snapping the Marlins'
six-match win streak. St. Mary's started off strong with two
straight set victories, 25-23 and 25-20 before VWC responded with a
25-20 win in the third set to avoid the sweep. The Seahawks
easily handled the Marlins, 25-13, in the fourth for the match.
Gregorini slammed home 11 kills along with four
digs, two service aces, and two block assists to pace the Seahawks,
while Kodan added her second double-double of the
day on 10 kills and 14 digs. Kodan picked up
one ace, one block solo and five block assists as well.
Sophomore middle blocker Gena Hlavinka
(Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) also contributed 10 kills as well
as two block solos and two block assists.
Senior Allyssa Blackburn (Lexington Park,
Md./Great Mills) nabbed 11 digs, while Obal dished
out 30 assists.
The Seahawks will return to action this Thursday, October 22 as
St. Mary's hosts Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference
match-up at 7:00 pm.
