St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior midfielder
Paul Decker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) netted
the golden goal with 4:31 remaining in the first overtime period to
give his Marymount (Va.) University Saints a 3-2 overtime Capital
Athletic Conference men's soccer win over St. Mary's College of
Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Chris Tipton (Severn,
Md./Meade) served the ball into the box and
Decker's initial shot off of
Tipton's pass was stopped by junior goalkeeper
Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) but
the rebound bounced over a stretched out Spranklin
and trickled over the end line for the game-winner at 95:29.
Corner kicks were controlled by Marymount (6-4-1, 2-1 CAC) as
the Saints notched seven to St. Mary's one, while the Saints fired
22 shots to the home team's 16.
Decker gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 16:42 as
he put back the rebound of Spranklin's save on his
initial shot. Decker's was the difference in
the first half as Marymount headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore midfielder Brian Payne (Baltimore,
Md./Calvert Hall) finally put the Seahawks (3-8, 1-4 CAC) on the
board at 50:21 as Payne one-timed a shot into the
upper right corner following a pass from junior midfielder
George Gusack (College Park, Md./DeMatha).
The 1-1 draw was short-lived as sophomore forward Cherif
Moktefi (Bethesda, Md./French International) sent in a
short pass to the near left post and sophomore midfielder
Kjell Crooke (Vienna, Va.) deflected it in to help
the Saints regain a one-goal lead at 56:11.
Payne struck again with 6:20 remaining in
regulation to force overtime as this time, he found the lower right
corner off a cross by senior forward Benard
Agyingi (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar).
Junior goalie William Brahmstedt (Falls Church,
Va./JEB Stuart) picked up three saves in the win, while
Spranklin finished with five for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's will return to action this coming Tuesday, October 6
as the Seahawks travel to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood College in
a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at 4:00 pm.
Marymount will next face Gallaudet University on the road this
coming Wednesday in league action under the lights at 7:30 pm.
