Marymount (VA) Edges St. Mary's in OT

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Senior midfielder Paul Decker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) netted the golden goal with 4:31 remaining in the first overtime period to give his Marymount (Va.) University Saints a 3-2 overtime Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Chris Tipton (Severn, Md./Meade) served the ball into the box and Decker's initial shot off of Tipton's pass was stopped by junior goalkeeper Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) but the rebound bounced over a stretched out Spranklin and trickled over the end line for the game-winner at 95:29.

Corner kicks were controlled by Marymount (6-4-1, 2-1 CAC) as the Saints notched seven to St. Mary's one, while the Saints fired 22 shots to the home team's 16.

Decker gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 16:42 as he put back the rebound of Spranklin's save on his initial shot.  Decker's was the difference in the first half as Marymount headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Brian Payne (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) finally put the Seahawks (3-8, 1-4 CAC) on the board at 50:21 as Payne one-timed a shot into the upper right corner following a pass from junior midfielder George Gusack (College Park, Md./DeMatha).

The 1-1 draw was short-lived as sophomore forward Cherif Moktefi (Bethesda, Md./French International) sent in a short pass to the near left post and sophomore midfielder Kjell Crooke (Vienna, Va.) deflected it in to help the Saints regain a one-goal lead at 56:11.

Payne struck again with 6:20 remaining in regulation to force overtime as this time, he found the lower right corner off a cross by senior forward Benard Agyingi (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar).

Junior goalie William Brahmstedt (Falls Church, Va./JEB Stuart) picked up three saves in the win, while Spranklin finished with five for the Seahawks.

St. Mary's will return to action this coming Tuesday, October 6 as the Seahawks travel to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood College in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at 4:00 pm.

Marymount will next face Gallaudet University on the road this coming Wednesday in league action under the lights at 7:30 pm.
