Frederick, Md. - A goal in
each half helped the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer
team snap a three-game losing streak as the Seahawks posted a 2-0
shutout of host Hood College to notch an important Capital Athletic
Conference win Tuesday afternoon.
The return of sophomore midfielder Brian Payne
(Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) to the Seahawk lineup has made an
immediate impact on the team. Playing in just his fourth game
this season, Payne scored in his second
consecutive contest as he tallied his third goal of the year
today. Payne gave St. Mary's (4-8, 2-4 CAC)
the early 1-0 lead at 2:55 as he completed a pass from junior
defender Amir Reda (Odenton, Md./DeMatha).
The Seahawks nursed their 1-0 lead until the 70th minute when
sophomore forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie,
Md./Mount Saint Joseph) took a feed from sophomore midfielder
Matt Grady (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and
beat freshman goalkeeper William Lane
(Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) for the two-goal cushion.
Junior goalie Paul Spranklin (Columbia,
Md./Oakland Mills) registered his third shutout of the season with
just two saves on 11 shots faced, while Lane
finished with eight stops on 25 shots faced for Hood (2-9, 0-4
CAC).
St. Mary's doubled up on corner kicks as the Seahawks had four
to Hood's two.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, October 10 as
St. Mary's welcomes Salisbury University to Seahawk Stadium for a
Capital Athletic Conference match-up at 2:00 pm.
