Fredericksburg, Va. - The
University of Mary Washington volleyball team needed five sets to
notch its fourth Capital Athletic Conference victory and solidify
its hold on the No. 2 spot in the league standings as the Eagles
stymied St. Mary's College of Maryland, 3-2, Wednesday night.
Reigning CAC Player of the Week, senior outside hitter
Anne Lutkenhaus (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman),
paced the Eagles (15-4, 4-1 CAC) with 13 kills and 22 digs.
After dropping the first set, 25-19, St. Mary's (11-8, 2-2 CAC)
captured the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-23, to post a 2-1 lead in
the match. The Seahawks' energy dipped in the fourth set as
Mary Washington easily claimed a 25-14 victory to force a fifth
set. The Eagles outlasted St. Mary's, 21-19, for the match.
Junior outside hitter Claire Kodan's (Olney,
Md./Sherwood) tallied a match-high 17 kills to pace the Seahawks,
while seniors Jen Lamar (Collegeville,
Pa./Spring-Ford) and Sarah Gregorini (Ellicott
City, Md./Centennial) each notched 11 kills on the offensive side
of the ball.
Defensively, Kodan, Gregorini
and freshman libero Cecilia Blanc (Laytonsville,
Md./Poolesville) each picked up 13 digs, while freshman setter
Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown)
contributed 10. As a team, the Seahawks combined for 8.0
total blocks on 1 block solo and 14 block assists.
Mullennix dished out a season-high 45 assists
to aide the Seahawk offense.
The Seahawks will return to action in a week as St. Mary's
travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet University in a
Capital Athletic Conference match on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00
pm.
