St. Mary's City, Md. - Dominance on the boards
and strong shooting propelled Christopher Newport University to a
77-64 non-conference women's basketball triumph Tuesday night over
St. Mary's College of Maryland. Junior guard Chelsie
Schweers (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) led all players with 19
points as Christopher Newport remains undefeated at 3-0.
Also scoring in double figures for the Captains were junior
forward Jessica Moore (Fredericksburg,
Va./Stafford) with 12 points and sophomore guard Alysa
Kerr (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) and freshman center
Barbara Davis (Catharpin, Va./Stonewall Jackson)
each tallied 10. Davis recorded a
double-double as she hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds to help CNU
post a 55-20 rebounding differential for the game.
The Seahawks (0-4) closed a nine-point gap in the second half
with a 10-4 run to pull within 43-40 at 14:31 but that would be as
close as the home team came for the remainder of the contest.
CNU stretched its three-point lead to 20 (71-51) as
Kerr's jumper capped a 28-11 run at 5:54.
Junior forward Jamie Roberts (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) paced St. Mary's with 13 points and three boards off
the bench while freshman guard Pui Sham
(Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) added 12 points and three
assists. Junior guard Megan Seeman
(Frederick, Md./Linganore) chipped in 11 points and three assists
while senior guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie,
Md./Elizabeth Seton) contributed 10.
After CNU opened up the game with a 5-0 run, the Seahawks
responded with an 8-2 run to claim its first lead of the game at
15:16. After that, the game was tied five times before the
Captains closed out the first half with a 10-3 lead to own a 37-30
halftime advantage.
Christopher Newport shot 51.7% from the floor but the Seahawk
defense forced 24 turnovers and converted 22 points off those
turnovers. St. Mary's controlled the ball well when they had
possession, committing only 10 turnovers.
St. Mary's will be back on the court after the Thanksgiving
break when the Seahawks host Shenandoah University in
non-conference action on Sunday, November 29 at 2:00 pm.
