York, Pa. – After falling in the first
game, the York (Pa.) College Spartans rallied back to win three in
a row, defeating St. Mary's College of Maryland, 24-26, 25-19,
25-18, 25-21, in Capital Athletic Conference first round action
Tuesday night.
Despite receiving a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs from junior
outside hitter Claire Kodan
(Olney, Md./Sherwood), St. Mary's (18-14) was unable to carry the
momentum from its 26-24 win in the first set and saw its 2009
campaign come to an end with a 3-1 loss at York. The loss
marked the first time since 2005 that the Seahawks have not
advanced beyond the first round.
On the defensive side of the ball, freshman libero Cecilia
Blanc (Laytonsville, Md./Poolesville) and senior
outside hitter Sarah
Gregorini (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led St.
Mary's with 12 digs each while senior middle blocker Jen Lamar
(Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) contributed six kills and three
blocks.
With the loss, three Seahawk players concluded their playing
careers. Senior Allyssa
Blackburn (Leonardtown, Md./Great Mills) finished off
her two-year career with 101 digs and 15 service aces while
Gregorini, a four-year letter winner, racked up
1,473 digs, 1,003 kills, 155 service aces and 104 total blocks in
128 matches (455 sets). Lamar also wrapped
up her four-year career with 673 kills, 444 total blocks, and 186
digs in 125 matches (447 sets).
