University overcame a four-point halftime deficit to post a 59-50
Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's College of
Maryland Wednesday night as two Saints finished in double digits.
Sophomore forward Jackie Bohenek (Bridgewater,
Mass./Rockland) notched Marymount's (5-0, 2-0 CAC) go-ahead layup
at 12:57, capping a 14-8 run to open up the second half of play and
return the lead to the Saints for good. Marymount, who is
ranked No. 10 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Top 25
Coaches Poll and No. 12 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, went on to
stretch its lead to nine (50-41) at 4:34 following a three-pointer
by junior guard Amanda Billy (Syracuse,
N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy).
Freshman Jasmine Jones' (Gaithersburg,
Md./Gaithersburg) pulled St. Mary's (1-5, 0-1 CAC) within 51-47
with 2:33 left in the game; however, the Saints went 6-for-6 from
the free throw line in the final 38 seconds to seal the win and
remain undefeated on the season.
Billy led all players with 16 points while
adding six rebounds. Bohenek finished with a
double-double on 13 points and 10 boards while junior forward
Maame Amponsah (Beltsville, Md./Lanham Christian)
hauled in a game-high 12 caroms and chipped in nine points.
Senior guard Terrell White (Ashburn, Va./Stone
Bridge) contributed 10 rebounds, helping Marymount post a 54-37
edge in rebounding.
The Seahawks took an early 8-4 lead at 16:21 behind six points
from senior guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie,
Md./Elizabeth Seton). Marymount knotted the contest four
times in the first half before St. Mary's used a 9-5 run to close
out the half and boast a 28-24 halftime lead. As a team, SMCM
shot 41.4% from the floor in the half while the Saints connected on
only 23.5% of their shots.
Saint-Aubin registered a double-double on 10
points and a team-high 11 rebounds while freshman guard Pui
Sham (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) added 12 points,
six caroms, and three assists. Senior center Alex
Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) chipped in 10 points
and two blocks.
St. Mary's will continue conference play this Saturday, December
5 as the Seahawks welcome Stevenson University to the ARC
Arena. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
