St. Mary's City, Md. - Salisbury University
withstood a feisty St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
basketball team in the second half to come out with a 64-59 road
victory in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
The determined Seahawks (2-6, 1-2 CAC) knotted the contest twice
in the second half, finally reclaiming a 59-58 lead at the
two-minute mark as St. Mary's used a 13-6 run to erase six-point
deficit. However, a crucial turnover in the offensive end
changed the momentum back to Salisbury as sophomore guard
K.C. Curran (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) stroked a
three at the other end for a two-point lead with under a minute
left.
Momentum seemed to be changing again when freshman guard
Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield) was
awarded three free throws and the opportunity to at least tie the
game with 23 seconds left. Alas, Sham was
off the mark for all three and back-to-back turnovers sealed the
win for Salisbury.
Senior forward Kylie Hall (Baltimore,
Md./Lansdowne) paced the Sea Gulls (5-1, 2-0 CAC) with a
double-double on 23 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Senior forward Janay Johnson (Baltimore,
Md./Catonsville) also finished in double digits for the visitors
with 16 points as Johnson was a perfect 6-of-6
from the floor in the first half, ending the evening 7-of-8.
St. Mary's came out firing as the Seahawks opened up the contest
with on a 10-2 run, sparked by a layup from senior guard
Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton)
and capped by a three-pointer from Sham at 16:43.
Salisbury made quick work of its deficit, rallying for its first
lead at 8:59 (21-20) following a 19-10 run. The two squads
then traded one-point leads before the Sea Gulls closed out the
half on a 12-4 run to post a 37-30 halftime lead as
Johnson led all players with 13 first-half points.
Saint-Aubin finished as the Seahawks' leading
scorer with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting and a perfect
7-of-7 from the free throw line while junior guard Megan
Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore) tallied a season-high 17
points. Saint-Aubin and senior center
Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) paced the
home team on the boards with seven each.
The Seahawks will return to the court this Saturday, December 12
when St. Mary's travels to Annville, Pennsylvania to take on
Lebanon Valley College in non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
