Fredericksburg, Va. - Balanced
scoring was the name of the game as the third-seeded University of
Mary Washington easily ran away from the sixth-seeded St. Mary's
College of Maryland women's basketball team with a 66-34 victory in
first round action of the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Women's
Basketball Tournament Tuesday night.
Mary Washington (21-5, 12-4 CAC) started the contest shooting
51.7 percent from the floor, including 3-of-8 threes, while
limiting the Seahawks to 17.9 percent and forcing 13 turnovers in
the first half. The Eagles did all their damage in the first
half as the home team rolled to a 37-12 halftime advantage.
UMW's freshman guard Jenna McRae (Springfield,
Va./Annandale) led all scorers at intermission with 12 of her
game-high 16 points as McRae was 4-of-6 from the
floor and 2-of-2 threes.
The contest settled in the second half as Mary Washington only
outscored St. Mary's, 29-22. For the game, the Eagles
capitalized on the Seahawks' 25 turnovers with 24 points and
notched 26 points in the paint to the visitors' six.
Along with her game-high 16 points, McRae
hauled in nine rebounds, while senior guard Kaitie
Clarkin (Centreville, Va./Westfield) grabbed a game-high
10 boards and dished out a game-high six assists.
Freshman guard Bethany Townsend (Accokeek,
Md./Gwynn Park) paced the Seahawks with 11 points off the bench on
5-of-11 shooting. Townsend and senior
forwards Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel)
and Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) grabbed six
caroms each.
With tonight's loss, St. Mary's is eliminated from the CAC
tournament and ends its season at 9-17 (6-10 CAC).
