Kleinberg Leads No. 16 JHU to Shutout Win over St. Mary's

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior midfielder Evan Kleinberg (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) netted the contest's only goal 12 minutes into the start of the second half to propel No. 16 Johns Hopkins University to a season-opening 1-0 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Tuesday evening.

From just outside the penalty box, senior midfielder Max Venker (Oldsmar, Fla./Palm Harbor University) slotted a pass through a pair of Seahawk defenders to where Kleinberg ran onto it and put it into the lower right corner at 32:59.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half but it wasn't for a lack of trying on the part of the Blue Jays (0-1), who took 11 shots in the first 45 minutes.  Junior goalkeeper Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) kept JHU at bay, making two point blank saves around the 21-minute mark on two consecutive shots by senior forward Ryan Aronberg (Davie, Fla./Boyd Anderson).

After being held without a shot in the first half, St. Mary's (0-1) came on strong after halftime and fired off six with four of them being on goal.

Johns Hopkins outshot the Seahawks, 20-6, and posted a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.  The Blue Jays now lead the all-time series history, 21-0-0, since the two teams' first meeting back in 1984.

Spranklin finished the outing with six stops, while JHU's senior Ravi Gill (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) picked up four saves.

St. Mary's will return to action this weekend (September 12-13) at the Elmer Lord Classic hosted by Salisbury University (Salisbury, Md.).  The Seahawks kick-off the Classic on Saturday with a match-up against No. 20 Richard Stockton College at 4:00.  SMCM closes out the weekend with a contest against Capital (Ohio) University at 1:00 on Sunday.

Johns Hopkins faces Buffalo State College on Friday, September 4 at 5:00 in its own Blue Jay Invitational.
