Westminster, Md. - Senior
midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring,
Md./Montgomery Blair) led St. Mary's College of Maryland to a
season-opening 3-0 shutout of McDaniel College Tuesday afternoon as
Esparza found the back of the net twice and helped
out on the game-winning goal.
Freshman midfielder Liza Sitz (Silver Spring,
Md./James Hubert Blake) notched her first collegiate goal as
Sitz collected a long pass from
Esparza on the left side and fired it off the
right post for a 1-0 Seahawk lead at 20:28.
St. Mary's (1-0) went into halftime with a 2-0 margin as
Esparza received a through ball from sophomore
midfielder Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King
Philip Regional) and beat senior Leanne Hollinger
(Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) for her first tally of the season
at 24:12.
Esparza picked up her second of the afternoon
at 57:17 as she dribbled in and shot from the right side to seal
the 3-0 victory.
The Seahawk defense stymied McDaniel (0-1), holding the Green
Terror to just one shot in 90 minutes. St. Mary's posted a
19-1 shot margin and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Lacey Johnson (Leonardtown,
Md./Patuxent) started in goal for SMCM, not needing to make a save
in 66 minutes of action. Freshman Grace
Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) played 24 minutes
of relief, making no saves either.
Hollinger finished the contest with 10 saves
for the home team.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, September 5 when
the Seahawks travel to Frostburg, Md. to take on Frostburg State
University in non-conference action at 3:00.
