Scharfenberg Propels St. Mary's to 4-0 Shutout of Bridgewater (Va)

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - Sophomore forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored twice in a 1:28-minute span in the first half to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 4-0 blanking of Bridgewater (Va.) College Sunday afternoon on the final day of the inaugural Capital Athletic Conference (CAC)/Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Challenge.

As a whole, the CAC captured the Challenge as both ODAC schools went 0-2 for the weekend.  No. 13 Salisbury University finished first in the standings as the Sea Gulls outscored their opponents 16-1, while St. Mary's came in second with a 6-0 scoring margin.  Randolph-Macon College finished third and Bridgewater fourth as R-MC scored once against Salisbury and BC was scoreless all weekend.

Sophomore forward Chris Quamina (Glen Burnie, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) assisted on Scharfenberg's first tally as Quamina split two defenders inside the penalty box and flicked a short pass to Scharfenberg, who then found the upper right corner at 21:32.

The Seahawks (2-3) went up 2-0 at 23:00 as sophomore midfielder Matt Grady (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) fed Scharfenberg up the middle and Scharfenberg had a left-footed strike to beat sophomore goalkeeper Travis Morris (Westminster, Md.) to the left.

Grady continued the offensive surge at 41:47 as he blasted in a quick feed from senior forward Benard Agyingi (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) into the left corner as St. Mary's took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

The contest's final tally came at 61:34 as junior midfielder George Gusack (College Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) put the finishing touches on a pass from Quamina.

Junior goalkeeper Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) continued his stellar play in goal, registering his second shutout of the season with three saves.  Morris finished the contest with four goals against and seven stops in the fifth consecutive loss for Bridgewater (1-5).

St. Mary's will return to action Wednesday, September 16 as the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on the University of Mary Washington in the CAC opener for both squads at 4:00 p.m.
