Mary Washington Holds on for First League Win

Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. - One goal was all that the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team needed to edge St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon as the Eagles notched a 1-0 victory in Capital Athletic Conference action.

Junior midfielder Jae Park (Herndon, Va./Herndon) netted the would-be game-winner early on in the match as Park completed a feed from sophomore forward Will Gallop (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) at 12:10.

From that point on, it was a defensive battle as both goalkeepers stood their ground despite the offensive pressure being thrown at them.  Senior Emmett Rutkowski (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) notched his second consecutive shutout with two saves.

The Eagles (5-2, 1-0 CAC), who are ranked ninth in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region, outshot St. Mary's (2-4, 0-1 CAC) by a 14-8 margin, while corner kicks were dead even at six each.

Junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) tallied four saves in the loss.

St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, September 19 as the Seahawks host Wesley College in another CAC tilt at 2:00 p.m.
