Owings Mills, Md. - A goal in
each half secured a 2-1 victory for the Stevenson University
women's soccer team over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday
afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.
Stevenson's (4-1-1, 1-0 CAC) first goal was a bit fluky as
sophomore goalkeeper Lacey Johnson (Leonardtown,
Md./Patuxent) punched at senior midfielder Katie
Decker's (White Hall, Md./Hereford) corner kick and the
rebound from Johnson's gloves hit off the post
into the net for an early 1-0 Mustang lead at 2:48.
Sophomore forward Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont,
Md./Catoctin) gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead at 65:46 when
Eyler beat her defender to the right side and
fired in a shot past freshman goalkeeper Grace
Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake).
The Seahawks (2-3, 1-1 CAC) avoided the shutout when senior
forward Lea Gonzalez (Washington, D.C./Potomac)
found the back of the net at 68:52 as Gonzalez
took a shot from the left wing after an unsuccessful clear.
Stevenson's goalkeeping tandem of sophomore Brittany
Ross (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) and freshman
Lauren Weitzman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mills)
combined for six saves as each keeper played 45 minutes.
Ross started the contest and notched three stops,
while Weitzman gave up the goal.
Johnson came out in the 19th minute following
injury, making one save and yielding one goal.
Koplow finished the contest with three saves and
one goal against in 71:20.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, September 19
when the Seahawks travel to Farmingdale, N.Y. to take on
