St. Mary's City, Md. - The three-time defending
Capital Athletic Conference champions, University of Mary
Washington, had three players in double figures en route to a 63-51
CAC victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's
basketball team Wednesday night.
Sophomore guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va./James
Madison) paced the Eagles (10-3, 5-0 CAC) with a game-high 19
points on 7-of-15 shooting and team-best seven rebounds while
freshmen Carol Dye (Springfield, Va./Annandale)
and Kate Vennergrund (Centreville,
Va./Centreville) each tallied 10 points.
St. Mary's (2-11, 1-4 CAC) largest lead of the game, 10-6, came
at 14:36 of the first half behind four points from junior guard
Megan Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore).
Mary Washington solidified its control of the half with a 13-7 run,
stretching their lead to nine three times before freshman guard
Pui Sham's (Springfield, Va./W. Springfield)
three-pointer as time expired to cut the Seahawk deficit to 32-26
at halftime.
Junior forward Jamie Robert (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) led the Seahawks with 16 points as
Roberts was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw
line. Seeman finished with nine while senior
guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) grabbed a game-high 13 boards. Freshman forward
Taylor Petrisko (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) chipped
in season-highs of seven points and seven caroms.
Momentum remained in the Eagles' favor in the second half as the
visitors bolstered their lead to double figures throughout the
remainder of the contest. Mary Washington's defense, which
ranks third in Division III in scoring defense, held the Seahawks
to just 25.0% shooting from the floor in the final 20 minutes,
including 1-of-8 from downtown.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, January 16 as
St. Mary's welcomes Gallaudet University to the Athletics &
Recreation Center Arena for a league tilt at 2:00 pm.
