St. Mary's City, Md. - The winning ways
continued for the 17th-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland men's
basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks extended their
regular-season home win streak to 15 straight with a lopsided 83-52
Capital Athletic Conference win over Gallaudet University.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) matched his career-high with four three-pointers (half
of the Seahawks' team total) en route to a game-high 21 points
along with a career-best seven steals. Junior guard
Alex Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons)
added 16 and a game-high five assists while junior center
Sam Burum (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) contributed
a dozen and six rebounds.
Guards Johnny Jackson (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Bryant)
and Tony Tatum (Birmingham, Ala./Huffman) led
Gallaudet (4-9, 0-7 CAC) to its only lead of the game as the Bison
opened up the first half with a 5-0 dash in the game's first two
minutes. Following back-to-back three-pointers from
Griffin and Franz, the Seahawks
never looked back, building a double-digit margin with a 17-2 run
and leading by as many as 18 in the first half.
A balanced attack in the first half propelled St. Mary's (13-2,
6-1 CAC) to a 36-21 halftime lead as Griffin led all players with
nine points. Gallaudet's freshman center Danny
Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) pulled down 11
first-half rebounds, including nine defensive boards, to finish
with a game-high 14.
The Seahawks' dominance continued in the second half as their
lead ballooned to 20+ points for the game's final 15 minutes.
All but two of the 14 players that entered the game scored for the
home team as the bench scored 27 points while St. Mary's notched
another 35 points off 31 Bison miscues.
Tatum was the only Bison to tally double-digits
as he finished with 10 points and three seals. Gallaudet
edged the Seahawks in rebounding, 44-38, thanks to
Kelly's game-high 14.
The Seahawks will return to action next Wednesday, January 20 as
St. Mary's travels to Frederick to take on Hood College in a battle
of the conference's top two teams. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm
at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
In their first meeting of the season, the Seahawks came away
with an 89-77 win behind
Griffin's career-best 51 points
in the Pride of Maryland championship game.
