St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's
College of Maryland volleyball team figured out the mystery that
was York (Pa.) College as the Seahawks halted York's school record
win streak at 21 matches in an exciting match Tuesday night,
posting a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23) shutout of the Spartans.
The win puts St. Mary's (15-5, 3-1 CAC) in a two-way tie with
the Spartans for second place in the Capital Athletic Conference
standings. Since dropping their second match of the season on
September 4, York had been on a tear winning 21 straight.
However, the Seahawks keep on trucking as they extend their win
streak to seven in a row.
York (22-2, 3-1 CAC) opened with three separate three-point
leads – the last being a 10-7 advantage – before the
Seahawks utilized a 12-1 run sparked by strong serves by senior
setter Katie
Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and three kills by
first-year Michelle Klima
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial). St. Mary's never
relinquished the eight-point margin en route to its 25-17 first set
triumph.
The second set was back-and-forth from start to finish as
neither team was able to hold more than a two-point lead at any
given point. Following a 22-22 draw, senior outside hitter
Claire
Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) gave St. Mary's a
one-point lead with her fifth kill of the set before two Spartan
attacking errors clinched the 25-23 victory.
The final set was more of the same with the two squads trading
points for the first 13 before the Spartans built a 12-7
advantage. St. Mary's regrouped after a timeout and clawed
its way back to a 15-515 draw following a service ace by sophomore
Cecilia
Blanc (Laytonsville, Md./Poolesville). Set play
returned to a back-and-forth flow until back-to-back kills by
Klima and junior middle blocker Gena
Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) sealed the
25-23 win and the match victory.
Klima and Kodan led the
offensive charge for the Seahawks with 13 and 10 kills,
respectively, while Kodan wrapped up her fourth
double-double of the season with a team-high 21 digs.
Kallis and Hlavinka combined for
11 total blocks while Klima added four block
assists.
Defensively, Obal and first-year outside hitter
Jenna
Campbell (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel) both finished
with 14 digs while first-year Bianca Livioco
(Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) chipped in 12.
St. Mary's will return to action this Thursday night when they
welcome University of Mary Washington to the Michael P. O'Brien
Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another key conference
match at 7:00 pm.
