St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's
College of Maryland men's soccer team got back in the hunt for a
Capital Athletic Conference playoff berth Wednesday afternoon with
a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Hood College as senior
midfielder George Gusack
(College Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) scored twice.
Hood (6-6, 2-3 CAC), who has never beaten the Seahawks, claimed
a 1-0 lead late in the first half when first-year midfielder
Eric Diehl (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) dribbled
across the top of the box and then chipped the ball into the top
right corner.
The game remained one-nil until the 71st minute when
Gusack struck for his first of the afternoon off
an assist by senior forward Nick Ibello
(Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall). Ibello
volleyed the ball to penalty kick spot where
Gusack ran on to it and banged in a shot off the
near post.
Gusack found the back of the net again just 13
minutes later, this time converting a feed from junior forward
Ted
Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the
Baptist). Scharfenberg slotted a diagonal
pass to his right where Gusack picked it up and
then chipped it over sophomore goalkeeper William
Lane Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) as
Lane charged him. After the chip, the ball
bounced in for the game-winning goal.
The Seahawks (4-9-1, 2-3 CAC) posted a 19-8 shot advantage as
well as a 3-0 corner kick margin.
Senior goalkeeper Paul
Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) made three
stops in recording his fourth win of the season.
Lane, the reigning CAC Defensive Player of the
Week, finished the afternoon with seven saves in defeat.
St. Mary's will continue its home stand this Saturday with a
league match-up against conference newcomer, Frostburg State
University, at 3:00 pm in Seahawk Stadium.
