St. Mary's City, Md. – University of Mary Washington overcame a 0-2 deficit for a five-set victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team in Capital Athletic Conference action Thursday night, snapping the Seahawks' seven-match win streak.
St. Mary's (15-6, 3-2 CAC) seemed well on its way to its third consecutive victory sweep, including its second in a row over a conference opponent, as the Seahawks claimed 25-18, 25-18 triumphs in the first two sets.
However, Mary Washington (15-7, 4-2 CAC) had other ideas as the Eagles edged St. Mary's, 25-22, 25-20 in the next two sets to even up the match at 2-2. The visitors carried their momentum into the final and deciding set, pulling out a 15-11 victory for the key league match win.
Senior outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and junior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) paced the Seahawk offense with 12 kills each while Kodan recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a team-best 20 digs.
Senior setter Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) dished out 41 assists while sophomore Cecilia Blanc (Laytonsville, Md./Poolesville) and first-year Bianca Livioco (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) helped out defensively with 13 digs apiece.
St. Mary's will return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on NCAA Division II University of the District of Columbia in non-conference action at 1:00 pm.
