St. Mary's City, Md. – A strong
performance by first-year Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton,
Md./Hereford) in goal helped the St. Mary's College of
Maryland women's soccer team play to a scoreless draw with
non-conference opponent, Washington & Lee University, Sunday
afternoon.
St. Mary's (4-6-2) will be back in action Wednesday,
October 20 at 3:30 pm when the Seahawks resume Capital Athletic
Conference action against Marymount (Va.) University in Seahawk
Stadium.
Wirtz, who finished with six saves and her
third shutout of the season, denied Washington & Lee's
first two attacking opportunities – a pair of pointblank
shots off the foot of first-year forward Jasmine
Soo (Charleston, W.Va./Culver Academies) in the 8th and
15th minute. Wirtz also picked up a stop in
the second overtime period to preserve the 0-0 score.
The Generals (7-4-2) are now unbeaten in three straight contests
(1-0-2) as Washington & Lee posted a 17-13 shot advantage as
well as a 9-5 corner kick margin.
Junior Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings)
recorded her fifth shutout of the season with six stops.
