Box Score
Newport News, Va. – Though junior forward
Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the
Baptist) gave the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's
soccer team an early 1-0 lead, the Seahawks were unable to fend off
No. 4 Christopher Newport University and dropped a 4-1 decision in
non-conference action Saturday night.
Scharfenberg struck for his first goal of the
season just 1:18 into the start of the game as he picked up a
through ball sent in to the left side by junior midfielder
Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall) and
then went 1-on-1 with junior goalkeeper Justin
Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette), finishing with a shot
to the center.
The Seahawks (4-11-2) held on to the one-goal lead until the
43rd minute when junior midfielder Brian Lybert
(Honolulu, Hawaii/Woodbridge [Va.]) collected a pass from sophomore
midfielder Sean Moriarty (Yorktown, Va./Grafton),
making it a 1-1 game at halftime.
Senior defender Chris Thome (Monclair,
Va./Forest Park) then scored back-to-back goals at 47:23 and 53:34
to give Christopher Newport (15-1-1) a two-goal cushion.
Sophomore forward Andrew Bonorden (Yorktown,
Va./Grafton) notched the final Captain tally at 59:38 off junior
midfielder Danny Franklin's (Williamsburg,
Va./Jamestown) second assist of the evening.
The Captains posted a 29-6 shot advantage while recording 10
corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Paul Spranklin (Columbia,
Md./Oakland Mills) nine saves in the loss while
Wolfe finished with two stops for CNU.
St. Mary's returns home on Tuesday, October 26 for a
non-conference contest with Catholic University at 3:00 pm in
Seahawk Stadium.
