Fredericksburg, Va. – Sophomore forward
Brooke
Masimore (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) notched the
game-winning goal with 1:14 remaining in regulation to break open a
scoreless draw and hand University of Mary Washington a 1-0 loss in
the final Capital Athletic Conference field hockey contest of the
season.
With the victory, St. Mary's College of Maryland (11-4, 6-1 CAC)
secured the No. 2 seed in the 2010 CAC Field Hockey Tournament
which begins Halloween Sunday with first round action. As the
No. 2 seed, the Seahawks earn a first-round bye and will host a
semifinal game on Wednesday, November 3.
Their finish as the second-place team in the conference
standings marks the third time in program history that the Seahawks
have garnered the No. 2 seed.
Following a scoreless first half, Masimore
tallied her second score of the season at 68:46 off an assist by
sophomore midfielder Natalie Hackstaff (Denver,
Colo./St. Mary's Academy).
Senior goalkeeper Lydia Garcia (Bowie,
Md./Seton) and the Seahawk defense stood their ground as
Garcia turned away two shots and the defense
killed 19 penalty corners. Senior defender Blair
Lusby (Pocomoke, Md./Holly Grove Christian) came up with
three defensive saves as well.
Mary Washington (10-7, 5-2 CAC) finished the contest outshooting
the visitors, 9-3, and posting a 19-4 margin in penalty
corners.
The Seahawks will return to action tomorrow when they welcome
No. 11 Lynchburg College to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference
action at 2:00 pm, wrapping up the regular-season.
Prior to the start of tomorrow's contest, the team's three
seniors, Garcia, Lusby and
midfielder Allie Skiest
(Arnold, Md./Seton Keough), will be recognized for their years of
service to the Seahawk field hockey program.
