St. Mary's City, Md. – Four different
players scored for Christopher Newport University as the Captains
registered a 5-0 victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's soccer team in non-conference action on a rainy, sloppy
Sunday afternoon.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Seahawks (3-5-1)
who look to get back in the win column when they resume Capital
Athletic Conference play on Saturday, October 9, hosting league
foe, York (Pa.) College, in Seahawk Stadium at 2:00 pm.
Christopher Newport (6-4-1) owned a 3-0 halftime advantage as
first-year forward Emma O'Reilly (Springfield,
Va./South County) and sophomore midfielder Dani
Gunderson (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) each found the back
of the net at 6:19 and 41:03, respectively. The Captains'
third goal was an own goal at 21:07 as a CNU cross went off a
defender's knee.
Senior midfielder Meghan Arbegast (Montclair,
Va./Forest Park), who finished with a goal and an assist for the
Captains, notched her first goal of the season at 79:25 as
Arbegast put in a loose ball at the far
post. Junior defender Shelby Walters (San
Antonio, Texas/W.T. Woodson [Va.]) completed the scoring with a
shot from the top of the box at 82:52.
The Captains posted a 24-9 shot advantage as well as a 6-3
margin in corner kicks.
First-year Kelsey Wirtz
(Parkton, Md./Hereford) made five saves and gave up three goals in
72 minutes while fellow classmate Shelby Perkins
(Forest Hill, Md./Notre Dame Prep) played the final 18 minutes.
Sophomore Meghan Gumbs (Mastic, N.Y./New Kent
[Va.]) picked up three stops in the CNU win.
