St. Mary's Volleyball Finishes Third at Own Invitational

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team garnered third-place honors at their own Sixth Annual Seahawk Invitational after dropping a couple of five-set decisions to Virginia Wesleyan College and Division II Davis & Elkins College on Saturday.

St. Mary's (22-9) squandered its 2-0 lead against Virginia Wesleyan College (20-9).  The Seahawks had claimed 25-19, 25-23 victories over Virginia Wesleyan in the first two sets before the Marlins battled back with 25-20, 25-22, 15-10 wins in the final three sets.

Senior outside hitter Claire Kodan (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and first-year Michelle Klima (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the Seahawks in the loss with 13 kills each while junior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) added 10 kills. 

Kodan recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a team-best 20 digs and chipped in three blocks.  Senior setter Katie Obal (Olney, Md./Sherwood) registered her 10th double-double as well with 41 assists and 13 digs.  First-year libero Bianca Livioco (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) also had double-digit digs with 10.

In their match with Davis & Elkins (10-20), the Seahawks traded sets with D&E.  St. Mary's claimed the first set, 25-19, before the Senators responded with a 25-23 win in the second.  The Seahawks came back in the third with a 25-22 triumph.  However, D&E answered with a 25-19 victory in the fourth to force the fifth set.  The Senators edged St. Mary's, 16-14, in the fifth for the match win.

Kodan paced the Seahawk offense with 13 kills while Hlavinka and Klima each contributed 11 kills.  First-year middle blocker Trish Kallis (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) collected 12.5 points on six kills and eight blocks, including five solo blocks.

Obal picked up her 11th double-double of the season on 46 assists and 18 digs while Livioco chipped in denied 17 Senator attack attempts.

St. Mary's returns to action Tuesday, November 2 as the Seahawks welcome back York (Pa.) College to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for Capital Athletic Conference first round action at 7:00 pm.
