St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year guard Shana Lewis (Bowie, Md./Bowie) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team to their second straight victory as the Seahawks picked up a non-conference 75-68 win over the Lady Lions of The Pennsylvania State University at Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon.
In recording her first career double-double, Lewis notched season- and game-highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Sophomore forward Taylor Petrisko (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) also finished in double figures with 10 points and five boards.
After claiming an early 2-0 lead at 18:58, the Seahawks faced an eight-point deficit as Penn State Harrisburg put together a 21-11 run in an 8:30-minute span. Fourth-year head coach Barb Bausch called a timeout soon after to regroup her troops.
The timeout helped as St. Mary's used a 19-9 run in the final 10:32 of the first half to secure a 32-30 halftime advantage. Sophomore guard Jasmine Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) scored 10 of her 16 points in the first stanza with 4-of-7 shooting.
The Seahawks (3-2) never trailed in the second half as Lewis drained 15 of her season-high 21 points in the final 12 minutes of the game, going 9-of-11 from the free throw line. However, a scrappy Penn State squad was hard to fend off as the Lady Lions came within three with 6:22 left in the game.
A three-point shot by sophomore guard Miranda Zeanchock (Carrolltown, Pa./Cambira Heights) had Penn State Harrisburg (1-2) knocking on door as the visitors were down only 65-61 with 1:35 on the clock. The Seahawks closed out the game on a 10-7 run with a 10-12 effort from the charity stripe.
Sophomores Daril Foose (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and Stephanie Yetter (Thompsontown, Pa./East Juniata) each had 10 points for the Lady Lions while junior guard Dorothea Dixon (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) and sophomore Brittany Adams (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) each grabbed team-best eight caroms.
St. Mary's will wrap up its six-game home stand with a non-conference contest against Catholic University on Tuesday, November 30 at 7:00 pm in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
