Washington, D.C. - Four players reached double
figures as No. 17 St. Mary's College of Maryland notched its sixth
consecutive victory with a dominating 92-69 win over host Gallaudet
University in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
Senior guard Camontae Griffin (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) tied for scoring honors as Griffin
tallied 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting to pace the Seahawks (20-3,
12-2 CAC) while sophomore forward Brian Grashof
(Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) posted a career-high 15 points
on 7-of-9 shooting and hauled in a game-high six rebounds.
The other Seahawks in double digits were juniors Alex
Franz (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) and Kyle
Jarczynski (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall College).
Franz added 13 points, four rebounds and four
steals while Jarczynski went 4-for-5 to finish
with a season-best 10 points.
The sluggish Seahawks received a wake-up call in the first six
minutes as Gallaudet (4-17, 0-15 CAC) overcame a quick 5-0 start by
St. Mary's with a 19-4 run that gave the Bison a 10-point lead at
the 13:50-minute mark. Following a full timeout, the visitors
regained their composure and forged a 16-4 run to reclaim the lead
for good at 8:38 as freshman guard Devin Spencer
(Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) capped the run with a three-point
shot.
Franz and Grashof both had
nine points in the first half as the Seahawks sported a 41-35
halftime lead, shooting a blistering 72.7% from the floor.
Senior guard Luther Weedon (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) carried Gallaudet in the first half with 16
points on 6-of-8 shooting while the Bison shot 53.6% from the
floor.
St. Mary's continued to exploit Gallaudet in the second half as
the Seahawks boosted their six-point halftime lead to double
digits, including their largest lead of 27 points (79-52) at
5:21. The SMCM defense stymied Weedon in the
half, holding him to just four points.
Weedon finished the night with 20 points to
pace the Bison while freshman forward Danny Kelly
(Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) contributed 15 points on 7-of-11
shooting. Senior guard Johnny Jackson
(Tuscaloosa, Ala./Paul W. Bryant) added 12 points and six rebounds
while sophomore guard Tony Tatum (Birmingham,
Ala./Huffman) chipped in 11 points, three boards, three assists and
three steals.
The Seahawks will be back on the court Saturday afternoon as St.
Mary's welcomes York (Pa.) College to the ARC Arena for a crucial
battle between the top two teams in the conference. Tip-off
is set for 4:00 pm. A Seahawk win Saturday would secure
home-court advantage throughout the CAC tournament which begins
next week.
