Fredericksburg, Va. - Strong second-half play
propelled nationally-ranked University of Mary Washington to a
convincing 71-48 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland Sunday
evening in the regular-season finale for both squads.
The win gave No. 23/25 Mary Washington (20-4, 15-1 CAC) a share
of the Capital Athletic Conference regular-season title as the
Eagles finished tied for first with No. 7 Marymount (Va.)
University. A coin toss determined that Mary Washington would be
the top seed in the upcoming CAC tournament which begins this
Tuesday, February 23 with first-round action.
Sophomore guard Jenna McRae (Springfield,
Va./Annandale) paced the Eagles with 13 points while adding seven
rebounds, two assists and two blocks. First-year guard
Kate Vennergrund (Centreville, Va./Centreville)
also reached double figures with 11 points as well as six boards
and three assists. First-year center Carol
Dye (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock) notched game-highs of
10 rebounds and five blocks while chipping in seven points.
Despite shooting only 29.2%, the Seahawks (9-15, 8-8 CAC) were
only down 28-21 at halftime as a 5-0 run in the final 1:41 helped
to diminish Mary Washington's 12-point advantage. Senior
guard Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) led all players with 10 first-half points.
Saint-Aubin finished her last regular-season
game as a Seahawk with game-highs of 16 points and six steals while
junior forward Jamie Roberts (Rockville,
Md./Barrie) added nine points and five rebounds. First-year
forward Taylor Petrisko (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake)
contributed a team-best six boards and six points.
Mary Washington dominated the second half, opening the half on a
10-0 run. The Eagles connected on 17-of-31 shots in the final
20 minutes and controlled the glass, 26 to 10, as the home team
finished with a rebounding margin of +16 (43-27).
As the fourth seed in this week's CAC tournament, the Seahawks
will see York for the third time this season in the CAC first round
as the Spartans finished as the fifth seed. Tip-off is set
for 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 23 in the newly named Michael P.
O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
