Montclair, N.J. – The St. Mary's College
of Maryland volleyball team split their first two matches at the
Montclair State University Classic Friday night. The Classic
features SUNY Cortland, Pennsylvania State University-Altoona,
Lycoming College, St. Mary's and host MSU.
The Seahawks (2-2) started the tournament with a 3-1 loss to
Cortland (7-1) as St. Mary's hit .129 for the match. The Red
Dragons garnered a 25-19 win in the first set before the Seahawks
evened up the score with a 25-15 victory in the second.
Cortland posted 25-18 and 25-16 triumphs in the final two sets for
the match win.
St. Mary's rebounded against Penn St.-Altoona (4-5), sweeping
the Lions 25-12, 25-21, 25-19. The Seahawks used a balance
attack in the win while holding Altoona to just 15 kills.
First-year Michelle Klima
(Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) paced the team on the day with 16
kills, including a team-high nine against Cortland, for a .375
hitting percentage over two matches. Klima
also notched nine total blocks on two solos and nine assists.
First-year middle blocker Trish Kallis
(Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) was next with a two-day total of
13 kills and eight total blocks (two solos, six assists).
Kallis added seven kills and four total blocks
against Cortland.
First-year libero Bianca
Livioco (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg)
recorded 17 digs while senior captain Katie Obal
(Olney, Md./Sherwood) served up seven aces, including five against
Cortland, dished 47 assists.
The Seahawks will wrap up competition at the tournament tomorrow
when St. Mary's takes on the host at 11:00 am followed by a match
with Lycoming at 1:00 pm.
