St. Mary's City, Md. – Sporting their
red, white and blue bandannas in honor of 9/11, the St. Mary's
College of Maryland field hockey team kept their undefeated run
intact, opening up Capital Athletic Conference action a 3-2 victory
over York (Pa.) College Saturday afternoon.
After the Seahawks (4-0, 1-0 CAC) squandered a 2-0 lead,
sophomore forward Lauriann Parker
(Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) notched the eventual game-winning goal with
1:11 remaining in regulation. Parker
collected her team-leading sixth goal of the season and second of
the day as she went one-on-one with senior goalie Maggie
Schlauch (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland), running horizontal
past Schlauch and flicking the ball over
Schlauch's left hand into the right side of the
cage.
St. Mary's finished with an 18-10 shot advantage while York
posted an 11-5 margin in penalty corners.
The Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead at 4:45 as junior forward
Susan Smith (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's
County) poked in a loose ball at the near post. St. Mary's
carried that 1-0 margin into halftime despite outshooting York,
10-1, in the first half.
Parker made it a 2-0 contest at 44:42 as she
fired in a hard shot on the run into the far lower left corner.
York (2-3, 1-1 CAC) avoided the shutout at 57:40 when senior
forward Katie Dawkins' (Easton, Md./Easton) shot
ricocheted off the far post for her second tally of the
season. First-year midfielder Jillian
Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) then made it
interesting at 62:24, evening up the score as she deflected in
junior defender Colleen O'Rourke's (Milford,
N.J./Delaware Valley) diagonal pass.
Senior Lydia Garcia
(Bowie, Md./Seton) picked up the win for the Seahawks with three
saves while Schlauch finished with eight
stops.
St. Mary's will return to action on Wednesday, September 15 when
they travel to Owings Mills to take on league foe, Stevenson
University, at 7:00 pm.
